Lieutenant Nelson began his law enforcement career in 1995 as a Class II Officer with the Wildwood Police Department. He attended the Cape May County Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer Academy in the spring of 1995 and worked during the summertime in 1995 and 1996. On September 1st, 1996 he was hired as a full time Police Officer with the Middle Township Police Department and attended the Cape May County Police Academy during the fall of 1996. He began his career in the Patrol Division as a Patrolman and was assigned as a Detective in the Major Crime Unit in September of 2002. In November of 2007 he was assigned to the Street Crimes Unit and in May of 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant as the supervisor of the Street Crimes Unit. In January of 2010, he was assigned to the Major Crime Unit until he was promoted to the rank of Administrative Lieutenant in April of 2012. As the Administrative Lieutenant, he handles Internal Affairs and oversees the following areas: the Major Crime Unit, Police Communications (Dispatch), the Records Division, the Police Dive Team, Alarm Billing Program, as well as the Animal Control Unit. Lt. Nelson reviews all police reports with the exception of accident and driving while impaired reports which are reviewed by the Patrol Lieutenant.
Lt. Nelson grew up in Cape May County and graduated from the Middle Township High School in 1991. Lt. was a member of the Middle Township Police Department’s Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team and one of the department’s Arson Investigators. Lt. Nelson’s supervision training includes Leadership and Supervision Training hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and he completed the Command and Leadership Program hosted by the New Jersey Chiefs of Police Association.
